Yet another thing to keep an eye on is your bike's Brake Fluid level, which I hope is obvious to all. However, just as importantly, Brake Fluid can absorb water and that affects the quality and it's effectiveness. So, how do we really know about its condition. Well, you could invest in a 1.5 V battery-powered Brake Fluid Tester to use in this regard. The type I show here (see photo) is about the size of a traditional ink pen but a bit fatter. It has two test probes at the end which must be dipped into the Brake Fluid and LED indicators represent how much water is in the fluid. It works with all types of synthetic Brake Fluid (e.g. DOT 4 specification) except the top spec' silicone-based type. Reference should be made to your Owner's Handbook to determine the specification of Brake Fluid recommended. No.1 Rule: if you do a test, cover-up surrounding paintwork first (e.g. the fuel tank etc) with plastic sheeting, as the Brake Fluid can damage it, if spilt. Referring to the manufacturers' instructions, the indicators of the tester will show these following typical conditions and prompt the action needed: Less than 1% water - No action required 2% water content - Check Brake Fluid regularly 3% water content - Brake Fluid should be replaced 4% water content - Brake Fluid needs replacing immediately.
