I know there is a saying that you are never too old to learn. With that in mind, I have learnt something recently from the main Club's forum relating to engine oil specification. At this precise moment, it seems possible that more Triumph members may consider doing their own oil change. Well, in regards to the modern machines, the specification is very important. I understand it should specifically be complying with the following "JASO" standard: MA or MA2.
In the past I looked for engine oil that met the "API" (American Petroleum Institute) requirements, e.g. SE/SC or SL/SF - which is still relevant but now what is JASO? Well, it does in fact stand for "Japanese Automotive Standards Organisation" which consists of major vehicle manufacturers in Japan. The specification comes from this body and it let's you know that the oil is designed for use in 4 stroke motorcycle engines where one oil system serves engine, gearbox and clutch. That is a major difference to the old generation Triumphs where the engine & gearbox lubrication was not shared. Marketing is very much all these days and I see that virtually all motorcycle oils are actually easy to spot since the container label usually has a motorcycle image on it! Hope this is helpful.
